Creative Engagement Session in Waterloo | Toronto Wedding Photographer
Soft light and quiet backdrops are great, but this session was all about experimenting — off-camera flash, bold architecture, and a couple willing to experiment to get a shot that felt different.
We started at the couple's own home in Waterloo, working through easy, natural portraits as the October chill set in (and to capture their dog!). From there we made our way to the Perimeter Institute, where the building's sharp angles and glass became the real playground for the evening. Autumn leaves glowing gold overhead, fall light catching just right through the branches — it was the kind of afternoon-into-evening light photographers dream about.
As the sun dropped, we shifted gears. Out came the off-camera flash, and with it, a series of creative, almost otherworldly shots — swirling lens flares, glowing rings of light, silhouettes framed inside glass and steel. The couple were total champs about it, patiently working through setup after setup as we chased a handful of genuinely unique images against the Institute's striking architecture. Almost two hours in, and neither of them showed a hint of fatigue (or cold!) — just game for whatever we tried next.
We closed out the night on the bridge, silhouetted against a deep blue dusk, city lights just starting to flicker on behind them.
As with all Slate and Flash wedding packages, this engagement session was included — a low-pressure chance for me to get to know this couple, get comfortable shooting together, and figure out exactly the kind of images they love before their wedding day arrives.
